Max Lucado is a former Church of Christ preacher, the denomination I grew up in, so I have heard of him most of my life. I’ve read many of his books, and even went to a Sunday school class at one point of my life that was really nothing more than a recap of his books. So I felt like I was revisiting an old friend when I got this book, as it had been quite a few years since I had read anything by him.
I was impressed in the very first chapter, entitled “The Part That Matters”. He tells about having coffee with a student at a Canadian University he was visiting, who told him of his discouragement with Christianity. He asked Lucado to tell him what it is that really matters.
At the time, Lucado says he had no answer for him. He thought of many things, but in the end, his responses seemed “timid.”
But now, he knows what he should have told this student. He should have give him the words of Paul from 1 Corinthians 15:3-5
“For I delivered to you as of FIRST IMPORTANCE what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. That he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
Jesus was killed, buried, and resurrected. Everything else hinges on that.
I had to put the book down for a bit, and just think about that. It’s deep. And it’s true.
The book is broken up into many short chapters, easily read in one setting. It’s very good, but nothing quite reached the impact of that first chapter for me. It’s a very good book and inspirational, but not a doctrinal study that would likely change your life. It’s more of a ‘light reading’ type book.
