Sarah's Quilt by Nancy Turner

The sequel to These Is My Words, this novel continues the story of Sarah Prine, now twice widowed, as she continues to struggle for survival on her ranch in Arizona during a terrible drought.

Her two sons, Gil and Charlie, return home after dropping out of college.  To Sarah, who has always wanted a real education, this is unfathomable.  But the boys are ready to work, and they help and protect Sarah.

Sarah's widowed mother, who is a bit senile, hires a water witch to find water during the drought, and dirty, evil appearing, scripture spouting Lazarus arrives.  Sarah cannot abide him, but he does find water, and shows up off and on during the rest of the novel, always bringing trouble.

Sarah's nephew Willie, the son of her long lost brother, arrives unannounced.  Sarah takes him in, but soon learns Willie's prostitute mother has convinced him the ranch belongs to him.  Sarah struggles with Willie, and more heartache ensues as Willie steals all Sarah's money at a time when she needs it most and her sons head out to find him.

As Sarah struggles to save her ranch, she survives the drought, a stampede, fire, legal troubles and the death of more loved ones.  She receives a marriage proposal, and finds a new love.

I would look forward all day to time to myself to read this book once my children were in bed, and I would read until I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer - it was that good.  It's another book you are sorry to finish.  Thankfully, there is a third Sarah Prine novel, and I have just ordered it!
